I wonder if I will miss the moss

after I fly off as much as I miss it now

just thinking about leaving. ~ excerpt from I Wonder If I Will Miss The Moss, by Jane Mead

Rogue Perfumery Mousse Illuminee Grand Cru by the perfumer

I was recently offered the opportunity to experience Manuel Cross of Rogue Perfumery’s inaugural extrait of his new Rogue Reserve line, Mousse Illuminée Grand Cru. I knew that this would be a perfect fit because a) it’s Manuel Cross, after all; and b) I have had a love affair with moss since kindergarten – which makes it a significantly long time to be enamored of anything, or anyone. The fact that Manuel chose to reimagine his popular eau de toilette, Mousse Illuminée – a lilting, light-infused fougère which was introduced in 2018 and originally comprised of > 60% aromachemicals, into an all-natural chypre extrait – was an even more challenging undertaking.

2026’s Rogue Perfumery Mousse Illuminée Grand Cru will be a limited production, simply because its olfactory essences are incredibly costly. Manuel intends to re-release his Rogue Reserve fragrances periodically. You and I, dear readers, have previously contemplated the difficulties inherent with perfumers’ ability to access quality materials which maintain/possess unwavering characteristics, concerning naturals, each harvest has defining vagaries of climate and terroir – just like fine wines. Hence, the appellation Grand Cru: it’s only applied to 1% of wines of the highest tier of quality. I think that’s a fitting analogy.

Manuel Cross generously provided me with a sample of Rogue Perfumery Mousse Illuminée for comparison. I’d like to express my impressions thus: Mousse Illuminée edt and the Grand Cru are relatives who share some familial DNA but are unique unto themselves. They each begin brightly, confidently, and remain verdant throughout – with the edt remaining consistent the entire time it is present upon the skin. The extrait, in contrast – evolves and changes considerably as it develops. The beautiful bitterness of artemisia (referred to as absinthe in the extrait), rich tree moss absolute from Robertet, balsamic green resinous facets of cypress, and frankincense are common to both scents, yet their personalities diverge. While the edt commences and finishes with a crisp, sparkling touch spiced with terpenic and camphorous laurel, the Grand Cru’s initial impact combines earthy, deep greenery with a brilliant anisic presence which may be attributed to the absinthe note and possibly the perfumer’s choice of cypress. I smell a profoundly loamy, wine-dark patchouli with its chocolate-nuanced aspect. It’s fascinating to me that my husband smells pastry dough; that’s not what I perceive at all – and he insists upon this characteristic each time I spray it. The warmth of champaca (a fragrant relative of the magnolia) and rose are so well-integrated that they contribute to a seamless heart. At this juncture Rogue Perfumery Mousse Illuminée Grand Cru possesses an alluring, subtle sweetness which is jammy (cypress).

I also notice that the frankincense in Grand Cru feels more pronounced and is delightfully peppery, with a dash of lemon. Whichever musks are employed, they are botanical, not aspirational as synthetic ones are. Robert Frost’s line “The woods are lovely, dark and deep” could not be more appropriate.

Rogue Perfumery Mousse Illuminée Grand Cru is nothing if not redolent of a primaeval forest. I am permanently smitten.

Isn’t it plain the sheets of moss, except that
they have no tongues, could lecture
all day if they wanted about

spiritual patience? Isn’t it clear
the black oaks along the path are standing
as though they were the most fragile of flowers? ~ excerpt from Landscape, by Mary Oliver

The poets and the ancients have a good deal to say about moss; its significance may be global, but the interpretations vary.

Did you know that moss is often viewed as a symbol of connection to past generations and places? Representative of care, quiet, and the beauty of time passing, this plant has been said to be the “essence of a Japanese garden”, according to The Guardian. Mosses are among the oldest known plant species on earth, and they serve an important function: they absorb CO2 from the atmosphere. In the Shinto belief system, moss is a sacred symbol of regeneration; to the Scandinavians, it was associated with faeries and elves – and was believed to aid in shapeshifting. To Native Americans, it represented protection and guidance, while the Druids, among other cultures – used it in rituals to help heal and promote spiritual wellbeing.

Manuel Cross has succeeded in proffering a mystical, otherworldly elixir of the anima: its shadowy, multi-tiered depth is never-ending. I am very grateful for my bottle; it speaks to me as no other perfume has done for a very long while. Although it is early in the year, this fragrance will sit unabashedly in my top ten of 2026.

Notes: treemoss, frankincense, champaca, rose, absinthe, cypress, patchouli, musk.

Bottle gifted by the perfumer – many thanks! I treasure it. My nose is my own.
