J’s image of Histoires de Parfums This is Not a Blue Bottle 1.8 Sold Out!
Sold Out! is Histoires de Parfums latest addition to their This is Not a Blue Bottle series inspired by the surrealist work of Rene Magritte. Although housed in the beautiful matte Kline blue flacon, Sold Out! is different from the rest of the line as no notes are given by perfumer Quentin Roussel and Histoires de Parfums, founder, perfumer and creative director Gérald Ghislain. Smelling without knowing is a great way to understand our tastes as they’re not influenced by your own bias, just your nose. It’s also how I like to look at art, the work and a title, spend some time with it and see how it speaks to me. Sold Out! feels like a beautiful olfactive abstraction and as the perfume dries down and for me an image of Provence is sketched. Perhaps your main question is what does Sold Out! smell like to you? For me it goes like this.

Hot cinnamon sparkles and flickers over fresh citruses as a cool breeze of airy lavender wraps around you with soft florals wafting in the air. Sold Out! feels like you’re smelling through memories of the past. Aromatic and sweet aromas from cosy musk around you, there’s something of an 80’s classic aromatic lavender men’s fragrance here, aldehydic with a kind of dihydromrycenol feel. Yet Sold Out! has a very contemporary vibe as vanilla start to envelop it. Baptiste Ghislain, Gérald’s son, in a short video with Luckyscent’s Steven Gontarski talks about how his father came up with the concept for Sold Out! as his children are now working within the company he feels like his time might be done but I doubt it. This merging of a vintage masculine style with a more of the moment gourmand that blurs all gender concepts and leans into the contemporary trend of vanilla could be Histoires de Parfum telling the story of the family entering or maybe it’s selling out giving us a vanilla? Following the trend but deftly done in their own unique way giving us this rather intriguing aromatic gourmand that walks an elegant line feeling sweet but not too much so and aromatic but tender, not a vanilla done in the usual way. This could also be part of the game of not revealing anything too.

Sweet orange gives Histoires de Parfums Sold Out! a juicy feel and makes the lavender come alive, feeling bright and fresh. There’s some cedar woodiness too giving richness to the perfume as vanilla starts to soften its edges turning it almost powdery. It feels very clean with the scent of jasmine coming through the window as if it’s blooming in the near distance. Sold Out! could also be the coming together of lovers, as the woody aromatics merge with the sweeter vanillas and jasmine. There’s almost a subtle spiced rosy quality as the cinnamon fades but more like dried leaves, letting this abstract jasmine sing.

As Sold Out! dries down the ‘notes’ merge ith each other. For me I get images of a sponge cake, one composed with almond flour, there’s a dry coumarin almond-like aroma with a whisper of cakey patchouli giving a subtle lushness. A drizzle of citrus from the opening softens onto this delicious cake that’s infused with a pinch of cinnamon and dried lavender is sprinkled over its top. A woody rich and creamy vanilla gives the almond sponge a moist density you want to sink your teeth into. More than just this tasty aromatic patisserie part , I discern pleasing floral musks that add a delightful aura. Abstract woody aromas, (perhaps Iso E Super and Ambroxan) meld with an airy sandalwood making things feel smooth and sleek. Yet that floral lavender scent lingers, making me think of Provence on a bright, sunny day. Histoires de Parfums This is Not a Blue Bottle 1.8 Sold Out! gives us the space to dream again and for me it’s a fun trip through perfume history and over to the Southeast of France, eating delicious cakes while walking through fields of lavender.
