Happy Wednesday, all! Classic 1970s Week continues here in the City of Angels.
Last night, I wore (for the first time) Oscar de la Renta EDT, from 1977. I don’t know how old my bottle is, but there’s no bar code on it, and the ingredients are listed as alcohol, water, and fragrance. I picked it up (unopened) on eBay for a song. It was supposedly inspired by L’Heure Bleue, but I’ve only smelled the Guerlain once, and too long ago to know how close they really are.
At any rate, this gets a “wow” from me. It’s a beautiful, powdery, abstract white floral – unquestionably feminine, but the spices, gentle woods, and fuzzy musk in the base made it easy for this fella to wear.
Today, I’m in vintage Lagerfeld For Men, from 1978. This one is near and dear to me – an early signature scent of mine. I first wore it in the mid-80s, and fell in love with it. Absolutely intoxicating stuff.
I was a broke acting student in San Francisco, and initially I couldn’t afford a bottle, so I’d stop at Macy’s in Union Square and spray my wrists from a tester before heading off to class, or on a lunch break. It didn’t smell overtly masculine to my inexperienced nose, so it felt wonderfully daring to wear it. I saved up for a bottle – a sexy, art-deco treasure – and it looked so darn chic on my dresser.
I highly recommend reading this review/buying guide of it over on Kafkaesque’s blog. She gets it.

Yeah, it’s Lagerfeld For Men, but it’s thoroughly unisex, and man, oh man, would I love to smell this on a woman.
