It’s Hump Day and World Pneumonia Day. Happy 80th to Neil Young! Other birthdays: Grace Kelly, Booker T Jones. What fragrance are you wearing?
On Mary Cassatt’s The Boating Party, which I used to go visit regularly at The National Gallery of Art when I lived in Washington DC, Wikipedia says…
The vibrancy of the woman and child, as well as the boat and sea, are indicative of this Impressionist emphasis on bright colors based on plein air observation. The cropped view of the boat and the asymmetrical composition also suggest the influence of Ukiyo-e prints, which interested Cassatt. In 1890, Cassatt had visited the great Japanese Print exhibition at the École de Beaux-arts in Paris.Â
So to tie together the south of France (Cassatt painted The Boating Party while living in Cap d’Antibes) and Japan, I’m in Diptyque Kimonanthe.
Reminder: on 11/14, for Claude Monet’s birthday, wear a fragrance that reflects the spirit of Impressionism (Wikipedia: “characterized by visible brush strokes, open composition, emphasis on accurate depiction of light in its changing qualities (often accentuating the effects of the passage of time), ordinary subject matter, unusual visual angles, and inclusion of movement as a crucial element of human perception and experience”) or scent a favorite Impressionist painting, or do something else creative with the theme.Â
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2025, where I’ll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.
