Every new release from M.Micallef arrives with a certain electricity. The house has built a reputation for fragrances that feel almost jewel-like in composition and presentation, so anticipation tends to build long before the first spray touches skin. With Purple Love, the latest addition to the Secrets of Love collection, the brand leans once again into gourmand territory it has done so well within the past yet does so with the elegance and polish that has become its signature.

From the very first moments, Purple Love fills the room with brightness and warmth. Pink pepper and bergamot sparkle like the opening fizz of champagne, while almond slips in quietly underneath, already hinting at the dessert-like indulgence to come. It feels like the moment a pastry chef lifts the lid from a glass cloche, something sweet and irresistible is about to be revealed.

The heart is where the gourmand character becomes unmistakable. The note of madeleine immediately calls to mind the classic French tea cake: tender, buttery, slightly golden at the edges. Here it is paired with rose and orange blossom, giving the composition a soft floral lift that prevents the sweetness from becoming heavy. Chocolate deepens the indulgence, while ylang-ylang adds a creamy, almost custard-like richness.

The effect reminds me of a rose-infused chocolate madeleine dessert, a freshly baked madeleine dipped in dark chocolate glaze, its crumb delicately perfumed with orange blossom water and rose syrup. The almond from the opening lingers like a faint marzipan nuance, tying the pastry illusion together beautifully.

As Purple Love settles on my skin, the base becomes a velvety embrace of vanilla and musk. The sweetness softens and spreads across the skin like the final dusting of powdered sugar over a dessert plate. It is warm, enveloping, and quietly addictive, the olfactory equivalent of the lingering comfort after the last bite of something decadent.

True to the house’s heritage, M.Micallef Purple Love is presented as a jewel in its own right. The deep purple bottle is presented in a stunning pedestal packaging which opens up to reveal the gem inside, adorned with gold, it reflects the artisanal craftsmanship that M.Micallef is known for somewhere between haute perfumery and fine jewelry. It feels less like a simple flacon and more like a keepsake meant to be displayed and cherished.

Limited in edition but generous in character, Purple Love captures the house’s talent for turning gourmand elements into something both decadent and emotionally resonant. If many dessert-inspired fragrances evoke pastries in a bakery window, to me Purple Love feels more like a plated confection in a Parisian salon de thé, refined, indulgent, and meant to be savored slowly. I’ll conclude by saying that David Chieze is truly a rising star, just as Michelyn wrote in her Best of Scent of 2025. His work for the house of M.Micallef has consistently felt perfectly aligned with the brand’s spirit, and with Purple Love, he may very well rival my long-standing obsession with Ô Féminin, another beautiful composition he signed for the house in 2024.
