Jovoy Parfums Ha Long Bay

Back in October, we reviewed Ha Long Bay, the latest perfume from Jovoy which presented a lush and nature identical mango note, captured by using MANE’s Jungle Essence© technology. In typical Jovoy fashion though, Ha Long Bay proves to be a lot deeper than the ‘fruity’ genre classification might suggest – it twists and subtly contorts into a buttery leather that’s dusted with recognizable elements of patchouli and cedarwood.

“Ha Long Bay is a way for me to go back to the original story that made me work in this industry in the first place,” Jovoy’s founder and creative director Francois Henin offered in a recent conversation (that I filmed and edited). “When I was in my 20s, I was in Vietnam and I had the chance to travel all around the country… making distillations of fruits, barks, leaves and so on. And when we were working on reshaping and revamping the brand I was looking for a perfume that would help us make the transition. And how better to do that but to go back to the original story?”

Jovoy Parfums Ha Long Bay, an olfactive tribute to Vietnam is inspired by an early morning misty boat trip to the iconic, picture postcard Ha Long Bay where these rainforests covered mountain islands raise themselves out of the sea, seemingly at random to create an alien looking, proto-tropical landscape. Henin decided early on that he wanted to use a very particular ingredient to convey his experiences of Vietnam. A very specific mango that he swoons at the mere mention of. Licking his lips he assures me that it was very much in high demand.

“It’s quite expensive, even for Vietnamese, over there. It’s called Xoài Cát… sand mango from the province of Hoa Loc… But as you know, you can squeeze a mango or boil a mango for hours. You’ll never get any oil out of it. This is where Veronique (Nyberg) from MANE said we have a technique which is patented and owned by MANE called Jungle Essence©.”

This proved to be the turning point he was waiting for. Off camera he tells me that it was the only way to get anywhere, properly close to the scent and taste of the sand mango he so desired. The meticulousness of the effort is evident all throughout Jovoy Parfums Ha Long Bay, from the mouthwatering juiciness that explodes first, all the way to the comely leather drydown. It’s vivid and dense, yet polished so believe him when he tells me it took the best part of three years to refine and approve.

It makes complete creative sense to offer something of a new olfactive direction for Jovoy Parfum at a time when the brand itself was shifting, being reshaped and refashioned.

“It is a new direction for Jovoy Parfums,” he nods in agreement. “But it’s really in the tradition of what a Jovoy perfume should be.”
