Perfumer Julien Rasquinet’s Extraits perfumes for Headspace Parfums are objects of scented beauty. I’ve written about Tabac, an exceptional autumnal coffee tobacco. Acacia is a different mood. Rasquinet captures mimosa in bloom, as the sun’s first rays of spring makes its blossoms unfurl. Acacia feels like poetry, with Julien Rasquinet shaping materials rather than words into a delicate beautiful form. Acacia is like wearing like Spring’s sunlight, a floral vanilla warmth glowing with a refined elegance and grace.

Acacia blooms with a bittersweet warmth, as a delicious berry and plum liquor effervesces on your skin. Flashes of herbal chartreuse greens and fruity dark purple brandy tones are captured in a l golden glow of dark vanilla rum. If this was a cocktail, I’d drink it. It’s joined by honeyed aromas, which with the herbal greens give Acacia a complex mouthwatering richness, one that pairs elegantly with the bittersweet davana facets. It’s relaxed and comforting, as its scent flows through your nose and you feel the mimosa start to flower from this delicious cocktail.

This moment is memorable; you can feel the subtle dryness of the flower– tonka bean giving it this slightly crunchy yet delicate texture. Think somewhere between dry rice and powder, then puff, the soft hazy sensation of the gorgeous mimosa quietly envelops you. The image of dappled sunlight through tress gently swaying in the wind kept coming to mind when I’ve been wearing Acacia. That first light of spring’s gentle radiance. Julien Rasquinet has composed a stunning mimosa accord here, capturing the “headspace” for Headspace of experiencing this small yellow flower. The nuances are stunning, honeyed tones keep the warmth of the boozy opening, while the tonka bean and plum fruits shift into an almond bitter cherry fruitiness. He also captures the airy greenery around the flower with violet leaf adding a whisper of verdancy and pale woods, giving the mimosa space as a watery kiss of cucumber feels like spring air drifting over your skin. Acacia feels fresh and light with a quiet elegance, forming a powdery haze as the golden dust shimmers in pale sunlight. The coolness dries as more tonka been arrives hinting at the next stage of this flower and perfume’s life.

The mimosa flowers change as Acacia’s final dry down arrives, they turn brittle and crack into a softly smoky woody vanilla that leaves your skin coated in an aura of floral powder. There’s a nod back to classic powdery perfumes, but Julien Rasquinet keeps Acacia contemporary. Ghost vapours of the boozy rum opening haunt the edges, giving a rounded feel to the sandalwood and vanilla, as opoponax’s balsamic facets glisten like memories of the captured fragments of sunlight. It’s also adding a subtle smokiness to the woody vanilla giving it body as the sandalwood turns the flower’s petals into a crushed velvet texture. Tonka bean’s coumarin side adds to this feeling, capturing the delicate texture of the mimosa flowers as they dry. The powdery floral amber is delicious on your skin, holding the pale light of the final days of winter and early spring close to you… the mimosa’s time of bloom. Acacia is an evocative ode to this flower and an elegant take on vanilla.
