Aether Arts Perfume Avocado with Salt
The universe rings true whenever you fairly test it. ~ C.S. Lewis
One of the many facets of award-winning (Art & Olfaction in 2014 for John Frum and in 2022 for Mayan Chocolate) artisanal perfumer Amber Jobin of Aether Arts Perfume which I find irresistible is her veracity. She lives her own truth, regardless of the dictates of fashion or trend. There’s not a false bone in her body – and even if she wasn’t a talented perfumer, I would still seek her friendship.

This predilection of mine may appear out of date, because we are all aware that many great artists have been/are rather abysmal human beings – and yet we continue to appreciate their oeuvres nonetheless. It’s refreshing that no such dichotomy exists when we consider Amber’s body of work. Her latest fragrance, Aether Arts Perfume Avocado with Salt reveals her creativity and dedication in an unprecedented manner. It doesn’t resemble anyone else’s concept of avocado that I’ve ever smelled.
salted avocado
How do I know that Avocado with Salt rings true? Oddly enough, it stems from the first time I ever saw someone sprinkling coarse salt on their fresh, ripe avocado – at work. I worked side by side with a remarkable Barbadian colleague for many years, and one day I watched with interest as she proceeded to slice open a buttery avocado, salt it somewhat generously, and eat it with a spoon. I am not food-naïve, but I’ll admit that I was puzzled. She insisted that this addition further accentuated the sweetness of the fruit (yes, avocado is a single seeded fruit). I was offered a spoonful, and it was clear that she was right.
I may often choose not to pry when presented with a modicum of information about accords: I believe that a certain level of privacy/maintaining trade secrets is understandable. Anyone with a gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer can dissect any compounds they wish (which is very likely part of the creation of the many duplicate fragrances on the market). I know that I can trust Aether Arts Perfumes to be vegan, clean, and ethical – so a little mystery doesn’t bother me. Her offered breakdown of Avocado with Salt is succinct: a zesty lime accord, a complex salt accord, and a rich avocado accord. Ç’est tout. And it really works.
avocado with salt and lime
Lime enhances and enlivens nearly everything it touches, in my opinion. It provides a tangy counterpoint to the nature of the unctuous fleshy avocado, as if one had ignited an aromatic spark. In creating the impression of a pronounced silvery minerality, the perfumer does not rely on old standards such as Calone® or other oft-utilized aquatic materials. Amber labored to evoke a more true-to-earth geologic salt, and it smells photorealistic. In summation, what we experience is novel: no employment of a coconutty element to enhance or round out the avocado, no brash aromachemicals lacking in subtlety, no attempts to render Avocado with Salt into a candied entity. The perfume is mouthwateringly savory and satisfying without heft. It helps to remind ourselves that many of Amber’s fragrances may be perceived as somewhat ephemeral: why else would she name her brand Aether Arts? Such perfumers encourage us to remember that volume is not always a reliable indicator of worth. There is charm in the transitory. Avocado with Salt may wear close to the skin, but it possesses a quiet tenacity; many hours later I can still catch whiffs of it on the flesh. Such perfumes encourage us to lean into them and those who wear them. It’s an intimate engagement – aesthetic and inviting, and a fragrant example of that which rings true.
