Parfums MDCI Vetyver Messager
A brand widely respected and much loved for its unerring commitment to the idea of bottling a very French sense of refinement, Parfums MDCI has recently released Vetyver Messager to fill a gap in profile that the brand themselves admit was absent. “Our men’s collection was missing a vetiver,” is how the brand’s creative director Claude Marchal put it when writing to introduce the fragrance and when you are familiar with the brand’s output, that sentence on its own, should be enough to stoke excitement.
“Vetiver allows for countless interpretations,” Marchal continued; “and the one MDCI had been hoping for, for years, had to bring not only something new, but also [deliver] emotion and pleasure.”

And it tracks that it should be master perfumer Nathalie Feisthauer who delivers on those promises considering both her varied, abundant catalogue and the fact that she has already contributed several fragrances to the brand’s range. Her 2019 composition L’Homme Aux Gants is probably the most relevant to this new release considering the way she fuses sweet, balsamic leanings with weighty woods but Parfums MDCI Vetyver Messager is dynamically unique. Still as accomplished and as stylish, it feels perhaps a touch more casual, reflecting the airy, grassy nature of its hero ingredient.

The composition itself feels seamless and rather Guerlain-esque in the way that it smells classically, aromatically French whilst fusing gourmand notions with woody, resinous base materials. The opening somehow – through a combination of citruses, light spicing and carrot seed oil – smells like a chocolate orange that’s underpinned with the characteristic dryness of the vetiver. It’s somehow simultaneously savoury and sweet and through its complexity I’m reminded of the taste of Botivo, an alcohol-free bittersweet citrus aperitif I was glugging all throughout January, that’s flavoured with wildflower honey, rosemary, thyme, gentian, wormwood and orange zest. It does not – by any means – smell the same, it’s just that the rush of Vetyver Messager’s opening reminds me of the scent of fresh lime, sugar syrup and an ice cold, grapefruit soda mixed with this brooding, darkly herbal, orange-hued herbal liqueur.
As one would rightly expect from MDCI, Vetyver Messager is deep and assured, opening itself up for interpretive analysis as much as everyday wear. Even though the perfume’s focus might seem to be playing more with those middle range frequencies of lavender, carrot seed, vetiver, ambroxan and oakmoss, there’s this constant coumarin leaning sweetness present that eventually evolves to a musky vanillic finish. In doing this, Feisthauer is engaging and playing with the vetiver, showing that the root can also have an allure that works in tandem with more edible facets.
Leaning gourmand, is a bit of an unexpected approach, yes, but it’s also a pointedly confident one and Vetyver Messager is a fantastic masculine-leaning gourmand that doesn’t so much revel in the overarching concept of vetiver as much as it does reposition it.
